Michale Kidd Gilchrist was born in Philadelphia and was recognized as one of the best players in America attending St Patrick High School in 2010 with Kyrie Irving in New Jersey. He attended Kentucky and in his first season led the team to a national championship, then declared for the NBA draft. He was drafted #2 and played 10 years in Charlotte. He has a stutter and has embarked on a national stuttering awareness tour.
The NBA veteran regularly takes time to educate others and help those in need of guidance about the challenges with stuttering. He is bringing out awareness, patience and understanding about a misunderstood topic.
“I remember a time when I didn’t want anyone to know about my stutter. When I entered speech therapy at the University of Kentucky, I told my therapist that I didn’t want anyone to know,” he said. “Today, I see my stutter as a gift that I have embraced, and I want to help others who stutter and those who are getting into the field of speech-language pathology.”
