President Biden actually took questions from the press today on a number of topics, including the chaos at the border in Del Rio, Texas. One reporter asked Joe the following question:
“Do you take responsibility for the chaos that’s unfolding?”
Biden bumbled through an answer and perpetuated the now-debunked news story that border patrol agents were whipping fleeing migrants along the Rio Grande.
“It was horrible what you saw. To see people treated like they did. Horses running them over and people being strapped…there will be consequences…It’s beyond an embarrassment. It sends the wrong message around the world.”
Upon saying the word “strapped,” Biden made a whipping motion.
Paul Ratje, the photographer who captured the pictures of Border Patrol agents on horseback, says no whips were used during migrant apprehensions. “I’ve never seen them whip anyone,” Ratje said. “He was swinging it, but it can be misconstrued when you’re looking at the picture.”
Despite the fact that no whips were used, the federal government has suspended the use of horse patrols along the border in Del Rio. Jon Anfinsen, the President of Del Rio’s Border Patrol chapter, issued a response to the suspension of horse patrols. “Suspending them all for even a brief amount of time takes away one of the few remaining units that have been in the field making arrests and rescues on a regular basis.”
