Progressives exploded on social media Tuesday morning just hours after the Chair of the January 6th Committee told reporters that the panel will not issue criminal referrals for Donald Trump or others associated with his administration.
“Our job is to look at the facts and circumstances around January 6 — what caused it — and make recommendations after that,” Chair Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., told reporters.
“We don’t have authority,” he added.
The Committee’s vice chair Liz Cheney immediately contradicted Thompson’s comments on Twitter.
“The committee has not issued a conclusion regarding potential criminal referrals. We will announce a decision on that at an appropriate time,” she said.
“If criminal activity occurred, it is our responsibility to report that activity to the DOJ,” she said.
