TACO JILL: First Lady Blasted by Hispanic Journalists for Calling Latino Community ‘Unique as Tacos’

While speaking on the Hispanic “Quest for Equity” at the 2022 UnidosUS Annual Conference in Texas, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden said the Latino community was “as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio.” The tone-deaf remark immediately caught fire on social media, with “TacoGate” trending.

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) responded to the FLOTUS flub, saying “we are not tacos.”

The NAHJ responded that “using breakfast tacos to try to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio demonstrates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region.”

“Our heritage as Latinos is shaped by a variety of diasporas, cultures and food traditions, and should not be reduced to a stereotype,” the statement continued.
